This is TTM's oldest caboose was originally built in 1919 as a box car and was rebuilt into its current configuration as a transfer caboose in 1952. Transfer cabooses are extremely basic. They lack the amenities of larger cabooses designed for long distance work, such as bunk beds, kitchens and toilets. They are designed for short haul work only, mainly moving freight and sometime passenger cars around yards and from one set of tracks to another. As such it is a basic shed on wheels with large open areas at both ends so the crew can see what's going on and their flag signals be seen from the locomotive cab where the engineer awaited instructions. Most transfer cabooses have bay windows, to improve the view from inside but this one does even have these. Transfer caboose 11919 was built and operated by the Missouri Pacific RR. This railroad, also known as MOPAC, owned three out of four of the cabooses at the Texas Transportation Museum. Once used a great deal by TTM, caboose 11919 is currently awaiting restoration.
